August 4 benefit concert
Grammy Award-winning folk rock duo the Indigo Girls, with special guest Lucy Wainwright Roche, and Native Environmental Activist Winona LaDuke, are hosting a night of music to benefit the organization Honor the Earth on Saturday, August 4, Town Hall, Provincetown, MA.
In a time when we are starting to see the global impact of dirty fossil fuel operations that thus far only the most vulnerable communities have directly and disproportionately experienced, we need to support organizations that serve as a voice for those not heard. Honor the Earth is a National Native-led organization established by Winona LaDuke and Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers in 1993 to address the two primary needs of the Native environmental movement: the need to break the geographic and political isolation of Native communities and the need to increase financial resources for organizing and change.
“Honor the Earth funds Native activists who are doing big things with a small amount of resources. These folks often fly under the radar, but not by their choice. We choose to support Native Environmentalism because we believe these are voices that need to be amplified. The groups we fund through HTE are finding solutions to the destructive energy paradigm and insist on finding alternatives to selling our public health for energy production and consumption, as they hold corporations and governments accountable to the people and environments they impact” says Amy Ray.
Honor the Earth encourages cultural revitalization and sustainable practices because, as LaDuke has stated: “There is a connection between ecological health, biodiversity, and cultural diversity-which is to say that Indigenous peoples have lived sustainably on Earth for thousands of years, and I suggest that there is something to be learned from Indigenous cultures. And that we need to support this work that’s building our communities, and practicing this knowledge as we work to build a sustainable energy economies, and end the fossil fuel economy.”
The Indigo Girls are really excited to be bringing an Honor the Earth benefit to P-Town, “it is a beloved community to us, and this area has a rich Native heritage.”
The doors are at 7pm on Saturday, August 4 at the Town Hall in Provincetown. Admission is $45. For tickets call (508) 487-2619, or online at http://www.womr.org. All proceeds to benefit Honor the Earth.
