Jury selection continues in trial of Northampton woman

Accused of killing wife in 2010

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) —Five jurors have been seated in the murder trial of a Granby woman accused of beating and strangling her wife in 2010.

The Republican of Springfield reports that jury selection in the trial of Cara Rintala trial is scheduled to continue Tuesday. Attorneys estimate the trial could last up to four weeks.

Rintala is accused of killing Annamarie Cochrane Rintala, who was found dead in the basement of the couple's home. The victim was a paramedic for American Medical Response.

Prosecutors say the couple had a turbulent relationship and financial problems.

Cara Rintala was living in Rhode Island when she was arrested in 2011.

They say the case is the first in state history is which a woman is charged with murdering her lawful wife. Gay marriages began in Massachusetts in 2004.
