A brief history of the newspaper that was first to the marriage equality battle.
For 40 years Bay Windows has brought its readers award-winning articles and editorials on everything from the AIDS crisis to Vermont civil unions and Massachusetts first in the nation marriage battles. Bay Windows was founded in 1983 by publisher Sasha Alyson, who eventually sold the paper to Jim Hoover.
In August 2003, Co-Publishers Jeff Coakley and Sue O'Connell took over as stewards of the paper from Hoover. Who knew that just 3 months later the Massachusetts Supreme Court would be the first court legalizing same sex marriage in the United States?
Bay Windows was on the front lines of that battle and subsequently our front page appeared in the sidewalk window of the Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC on June 26, 2015. That was the day the US Supreme Court recognized same-sex marriages as valid throughout the country.
